Insulation, R-values, Thermal conductivity. What does it mean? R-Values and Thermal conductivity, it can all get a little confusing and technical, so what do the values mean, and does it really matter?
The thermal resistance rating or R-Value is the measure used most commonly across insulation products, in a nutshell the higher the R-Value the better the material's ability to resist the transfer of heat. For example, a product rated R5 will perform better than a product rated R2.
To get techy, the formula m²K/W is broken down in two parts - - R- Value = Thickness (m)
- Thermal Conductivity: The rate at which heat penetrates through a given material. (W/mK)
So, does a higher value really matter? It sure does, as overall it will have a greater insulating effect keeping your home warmer for longer and subsequently saving you energy costs. If you have to choose reach for the higher R value to get the best result.
Here at JCC Build we are all over the new construction R-values changes which came into effect on 1st May 2023. You can be confident the right R-value products will be used for your project. |
